From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
(German) One who worked with stone, a mason.
This family existed at St. Gall, in Switzerland, more than four centuries ago as "Steinman, called Bingasser." The first settler in England was the greatgrandfather of Mr. G. S. Steinman (a name well recognized in our antiquarian literature), who with his son came to England in 1771.

'Stoneman.' Ornamental, possibly professional. German origins. From 'stein' (noun, German, 'stone') and 'mann' (noun, German, 'man'). Commonly borne by Ashkenazi Jews. In some cases it is possible that the the first bearer of the surname was a stonecutter or stonemason, but this is not necessarily true as Ashkenazi surnames were only occasionally given to members of certain professions.
