From the old barony of the name in the parish of Larbert, Stirlingshire. The first of the name recorded appears to be John de Stanhus, who witnessed a grant to the Abbey of Cambuskenneth, c. 1200 (Cambus., 79), and about the same period Adam de Stanus witnessed Gilbert de Umframville's gift of teind of the mill of Dunipais to the same house (ibid., 86). Roben of Stanhus was indicted and arrested for larceny in 1278 (Bain, II, 148). Sir Robert Stanhus, a Pope's knight, was chaplain of Mariton in the diocese of Brechin in 1447 (Southesk, p. 720). John Stanis was juror on an inquest held at Cupar in 1522 (SCBF., p. 266), and Johanne Stannus, a witness in Dunfermline in 1525 appears again in 1549 with his name Latinized Johannes Lapideedomus, cleric of St. Andrews diocese and notary public (DBR., 255,280). John Stainehous was a merchant burgess of Edinburgh in 1636 (Inquis., 2220), and "Alexander Stenos, tailer in Coldstrem," died in 1722.
