Of territorial origin from Stevenson (recte Stevenston) in the parish of Newlands, Peeblesshire. Stevene de Stevenstone of the county of Peebles rendered homage in 1296 (Bain, II, p. 207), as likewise did Johan de Stevenstone of the county of Lanark (ibid., II, p. 212). The fortalice of Stevene stood on a high bank of the Lyne Water on the site now occupied by the farmhouse of Stevenson.
