STEWARTON: From the old manor of Stewarton in the parish of Eddleston, Peeblesshire. Reginald Steuardiston witnessed an agreement between the abbot and monks of Neubotle anent the marches of Kynggessyde, c. 1250 (Neubotle, p. 27). It is uncertain if the Adam de Stywardestone of the county of Perth, who rendered homage in 1296 (Bain, II. p. 211) was of the same family. This Adam appears again in 1304-05 as a Scottish prisoner in Carlisle Castle (ibid., II, 1572, 1668). William de Steuartoun, perpetual vicar of Kylbryde in 1446, appears again in 1451 as William Stewartone without the 'de' (Irvine, I, 137,140).
