A surname which appears to be confined mainly to Fife. Willelmus Stirk was juror on inquisition on lands in Fife, 1390 (RMS., I, 854). Alexander Stirk, collier in Dysart, who appears in record in 1572 (Dysart, p. 37), may be the Alexander Stirk, burgess of Dysart, recorded as nearest heir of George Stirk, merchant and burgess of Dysart in 1604 (Inquis. Tut., 65). Helen Styrk and Jonet Styrk held part of the lands of Ouchtermutky, 1551 (Gaw, 42, 59). John Stirk in Dunfermline in 1579, and Sande Stirk in 1588, the latter again referred to in same year as Alexander Stirk (Dunfermline). In 1608 George Stirk was retoured heir of John Stirk, portioner of Auchtermuchtie, his grandfather (Retours, Fife, 191), Robert Stirk was messenger in Dunfermline in 1633 (RPC., 2. ser. V, p. 93), and Patrick Stirk was an elder in Dysart in 1641 (PBK., p. 209). Riccardus Stirk, portioner of Auchtermuchtie, was retoured heir of Robert Stirk, his father, in lands of Jerrassland of Auchtermuchtie in 1661 (Refours, Fife, 906), and William Stirk in Achtennie, parish of Forgandennie, is recorded in 1719 (Dunkeld).
