A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

From the town. Gilbertus de Striuelin witnessed King David's gift of Perdeyc (Partick) to the church of Glasgow, 1136 (REG., 3), and Walter de Striveling witnessed charters granted by King David and Prince Henry ( Lawrie, p. 138). Peter de Striuelin witnessed gift of the church of Karreden (Carriden) to the Abbey of Holyrood before 1158 (LSC., p. 10). Thomas de Stervlen who witnessed a charter by Alexander II of a yar (fish trap) super Leven in 1224 (RMP., p. 214) is probably Thomas de Striuelyn, archdeacon or Glasgow, 1228 (Soltre, p. 24).

Peter, son of Walter de Strevelyn, held a ploughgate in Hedinham (now Ednam), c. 1247 (Dryburgh, 158), and c. 1250 Sir Gilbert de Striuelyng, a cleric, witnessed a convention between Peter, bishop of Aberdeen, and Alan Hostiarius (REA., I, p. 17). Robert de Streuillyn was deacon of Dunkeld, 1263 (LIM., 77), and Michael de Strivelyn was a witness in St. Andrews, 1285 (Neubotle, 59). Sir John Stirling of Moray swore fealty,. 1291. His seal bears a shield charged with 6 mullets of 6 poins, 3, 2, and I, and S' Joh'is: de: Strivelyn: de: Mo... (Bain, II, 495). Andreu de Strivelyn, burgess of Inverkeithing, and Mestre Henry de Strivelyn of Stirlingshire rendered homage, 1296 (ibid., p. 188,206). Roger de Strevelyn was burgess of Elgin, 1343 (REM., p. 290), Alexander de Strivelin witnessed a charter by Robert the Steward to Thomas Simple of the lands of Cragrossy in Stratherne, c. 1360 (REG., p. 275), and Johannes de Striuelyn de Kyldeny atlestec the marches of Kyrknes and Louchor, 1395 (RPSA., p. 5). Walter Strivylyng was admitted burgess of Aberdeen, 1459 (NSCM., I, p. 16). A family of this name was settled at a very early period in the neighborhood of Dunmaglass, Nairnshire (REM., p. 99-1234). In the family papers of the Stirlings of Keir between 1160 and 1677 their surname is spelled in no less than sixty-four different ways (Stirlings of Keir, p. 54P).

A Mr. Stirling, who was minister of the barony church of Glasgow, during the war maintained against the insatiable ambition of Louis XIV., in that part of his prayer which related to public affairs, used to beseech the Lord that he would take the haughty tyrant of France, and shake him over the mouth of hell, "but good Lord," added the worthy man, "dinna let him fa' in." This curious prayer having been mentioned to Louis, he laughed heartily at this new and ingenious method of punishing ambition, and frequently afterward gave as a toast, "The good Scotch parson."
