From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

STITCHEL: From the lands of Stitchel in the parish of the same name in Roxburghshire. Milone de Stichele witnessed the grant of the church of Kilmaurs to Kelso, c. 1170 (Kelso, 283). Philip de Stichill appears as a witness between 1195 and 1214 (Cambus., 37), and the Chronicle of Melrose records his death in 1221. Mr. Robert of Stichel, the king's doctor, is witness to a charter by William the Lion, c. 1204-14 (Laing, 3). Robert de Stichhulle of the county of Berewyke rendered homage in 1296 (Bain, II, p. 207), and William Stichehill was one cf the archers of the east March in 1404 (ibid., IV, 669). The surname appears to have travelled north. Thomas Stitchel in Boigtoun, Aberdeenshire, is in record in 1716 (SCM., IV, p. 172), and John Stitchell, member of the Cartly Company of Volunteers in 1798 (Will, p. 23), maybe the John Stitchel, merchant in Huntly in the same year (Moray).
