This surname is derived from a geographical locality. (1), 'of Stubbs,' a township in the parish of Adwick-le-Street, West Riding of Yorks, near Doncaster; (a) 'at the stubbs,' one who lived by some stump of a tree or stumps of trees. compare Styles, Briggs, Stocks, &c.
