His seal bears a shield with three eagles displayed and S' Mavricii de Stobil (Macdonald, 2712).

STOBHILL: Thomas de Stubhyl was burgess of Irvine, 1260 (Irvine, I, p. 5). Payment was made to Maurice de Stubhil in 1292 and as Moriz de Esttubbille of Dumfriesshire he rendered homage, 1296 (Bain, II, 580, ' 810). His seal bears a shield with three eagles displayed and S' Mavricii de Stobil (Macdonald, 2712). As Maurice de Stubhille he is thanked by Edward I of England for putting down evildoers in his country (Bain, II, 894). He is probably the Maurice de Stubhil who was one of the fermers of Cyplaunde in 1291 (Hist. docs., I, 284). His lands may have been at Barstibly, near Castle Douglas, or his name may be derived from Stobhill or Stubhill.
