This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Stoke.' It is to be noticed that all the entries of Stoke (with one exception) are prefixed with —de—, those of Stock with de la or atte; 'de Stoke' implies a town or village, 'de la Stock' or 'atte Stock,' some single stump of a tree, Sec, where the nominee dwelt. Etymologically, Stoke is a much older form than Stock. Monosyllabic local surnames commonly add the genitive s, as in Williams, Jones, &c.; compare Holmes, Brooks, Styles. Hence Stoke is now almost unknown.

Stokes is an ancient name in this county. An old family of position bore the name as far back as the 13th century, when there was a Peter de Stokes of Dallington. Thomas Stokes, "armiger," and some, if not all, of the members of his family, which included four sons and twelve daughters, were buried in the church of Ashby Ledgers during the 15th century. Adrian Stokes by right of his wife owned the living of Tifiield in 1575 (B.). The name is also established in Leicestershire, Notts, Shropshire, Staffordshire, and Worcestershire, and there are also a few of the name in Essex, but it is for the most part now confined to the midlands. In the 13th century it occurred in the form of De Stokes in Oxfordshire, Bucks, Hunts, Suffolk, Yorkshire, and Lincolnshire (H. R.).
