Local, from some place of the name. Probably of English origin. Thomas de Stone of Roxburghshire rendered homage, 1296 (Bain, II, p. 209). Thomas de Stone was common councillor of Aberdeen, 1435 (Guildry, p. 185), and Jerome Stone (1727-1756), schoolmaster in Dunkeld, "was the real discoverer to modern knowledge of the ancient Ossianic ballads."
