STOTT: Northern English for steer and also for a heifer, was sometimes used as a nickname (Mawer, p. 191). Andrew Stott was admitted burgess of Aberdeen, 1490 (NSCM., I, p. 35). Margaret Stote in Dolphingtoune, 1675 (Lanark CR.). Alexander Stote in Maynes of Balyeordie, 1689 (RPC., 3. ser. XIV, p. 709). (2) Ewen (p. 178,342) with probability suggests that this name is a variant of 'Stout,' and that 'Stout' is of local origin from steorte 'a tongue of land.' He cites 'atte stout' in Devonshire, 1327, and 'Rog. de Stote, Northants, 1230.' compare Stute.
