This surname is derived from an occupation. 'the stot-herd,' one who tended stots, i.e. bullocks, the bullock-herd; v. Stott. All these forms are North English, and must be distinguished from Studdard and Stuttard (which see), with their other corruptions, although no doubt all are now inextricably mixed; compare Calvert, Coward, Oxnard, Shepard, &c.

Stothart is the most common pronunciation. From the office of 'stot-hird,' one who tended the stots, i.e. bullocks. The earliest mention of this surname in Scotland is in 1376 when David Stodhirde, John Studehird, and William Studhirde are recorded as tenants of Douglas in barony of Buittle (RHM., I, p. lx, Ixxi). Sir James Stodart was presented to a chaplaincy in the Collegiate Church of Methven, 1516 (Methven, p. 40). John Stothart alias Stoddard, weaver at Ashieburn, 1802 (Heirs, 519). Lower says "the pronunciation Stoth-erd, Stoth-ard, are a 'genteel' innovation." Stodert 1574, Stodhird 1567. See Herald and genealogist, III, p. 552.
