This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Stow.' Anglo-Saxon and Middle English stow, a place; compare Chepstow, i.e. the market-place, and Plaistow, the play-place, the open space for games, &c. There are six parishes of Stow and five of Stowe in England (v. Crockford). The parishes in Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire seem to have been the chief parents.
