Stradling Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
(English) apparently a nickname for a straddle-legged individual [from straddle, a freq. from strád, pret. sing, of Old English strídan, to stride] ‘Strad(d)ling’ was formerly a cant term for an Abraham-man.
This surname was latinized Easterlingus, and it seems to be a corruption of Estarling, a name given to the inhabitants of any country eastward of England, especially to those of the Hanse Towns. See Sterling.
Corrupted from Estarling or Easterling, once the popular name of certain German traders in England, i. e. "people from the East," whose money was of the purest quality, whence the term "sterling money."
Or le Esterling, came from Flanders t. William I., and joined in the Conquest of Glamorgan, where the family long remained of great eminence.
