Strangwas, Strongways = the Strong Stubble [Old English strang, strong + Old English wáse = Ger. wasen (Middle High German wase, O.H.Ger. waso), (damp) sod, grass, brushwood, stubble] The second element is that seen in English ‘wayzgoose,’ a stubble-goose, and Dialectal English ‘wase’, ‘waze’, a pad or bundle of straw.
There is a Major Hon. S. D. Strangeways in the U.S. It is the same with the English names Strangwayes, Strangwish, Strangwich; corrupted from Strangwish, a place near Manchester, which was possessed by the family in the fourteenth century.
STRANGWYGH: Verstegan mentions this name as "coming belike of a strong wyc, hold, or fortress." Restitution, p. 329. It is doubtless the same as Strangwish or Strangways.
