From the barony of Straiton in the parish of Liberton, Midlothian. There is also a barony of Straiton in Ayrshire, and a barony of Stratton in Fife.

Richard de Stratun, messenger of Alexander III, 1285 (Bain, II, 272), may be Richard de Straton, charter witness, 1292 (Neubotle, p. 292). Thomas de Straton or Stratone of Edinburghshire, one of an inquest at Berwick, 1296, also rendered homage in the same year (Bain, II, p. 201,215). Alisaundre de Stratton and James de Stratton, both of Edinburghshire, also rendered homage (ibid., p. 169,198). Alexander de Straton who signed the baron's letter to the Pope in 1320, may be Alexander de Straton 'consanguineo nostro' who had a charter of property at Inverbervy from David II (RMS., I, 234). John de Stratton, dominus ejusdem, witnessed a charter of lands of Wester Mathrys, 1351 (SCM., V, p. 249), and James of Stratton was valet of the earl of Sutherland, 1364 (Rot. Scot., I, p. 889b). John de Stratoun witnessed a quitclaim on lands of Gladsmure, Midlothian, 1427 (James II, p, 14), and another John de Stratoun was burgess of Montrose, 1431 (REB., II, 36). There were also Straitons or Strattons in Aberdeenshire. Cristina de Stratone granted a charter in 1451 in favor of the Friars Preachers in Aberdeen (Friars, p. 33), and Brice Strayton, a Scot born at Berwick, had letters of denization in England, 1480 (Bain, IV, 1465). Walter Stratone was rector of Dunnotter, 1502 (RAA., II, 431), and Arthur Stratoun had charter of the lands of Muretoun in sheriffdom of Forfar, 1593 (REB., II, 368).
