Streatfeild Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Streatfeild.' Mr. Lower says, 'There may be several places of this name. I only know of one, which is a "borough" of the manor of Robertsbridge, in East Sussex, called in a document before me, of temp. Elizabeth, Stretfelde; and this locality is within a few miles of that which has been, for three centuries and a half, the chief habitat of the name' (Patronymica Britannica.). The Streatfeilds of Chiddingstone, Kent, still maintain this old-fashioned spelling of field.
1591. Robert Streatfeild and Elizabeth Harris: Marriage Lic. (London).
1678. James Adams and Hannah Kellett, at her own disposal: alleged by John Streatfield, cabinet-maker: Marriage Lic. (Faculty Office).
(English) Dweller at the Field or Plain of the Roman Road [v. under Street, and + Old English feld, a field, plain] Lower mentions a Streatfeild in English Sussex called Stretfelde in the 16th cent.
The pedigree of the Streatfeilds of Chiddingstone, co. Kent, is traced to the early part of the XVI. century. The name has been fancifully derived from Latin Be Strata Villa, "the prostrate house," an ill-omened etymology, which the family do not deserve. It has also been fetched from the German Streitfeld, "the field of contention or of battle;" but the origin is doubtless English, and local. There may be several places of this name: I know only of one, which is a ' borough ' of the manor of Robertsbridge, in East Sussex, called in a document before me, of temp. Elizabeth, Stretfelde; and this locality is within a few miles of that which has been, for three centuries and a half, the chief habitat of the name.
