Local. This surname is common in the shires of Aberdeen, Banff, and Fife. Patrick de Strath (erroneously spelled Strach in Theiner, no. 398) was one of the canons deputed to elect the bishop of Dunkeld in 1312 (Pap. Lett., II, p. 96), and c. 1333-36 Adam del Strath was vicar of Elgin (Rose, p. 116). Thomas Strath was admitted burgess of Aberdeen, 1479 (NSCM., I, p. 28). William Strath, reidare at Culsamond, 1574 (RMR.), and Alexander Straith is recorded in Hornden, 1680 (Lauder).
