This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of the strother,' i.e. marsh, from residence there beside. 'Strother, a marsh. North Engl.' (Halliwell). This surname has its home in Northumberland. In Newcastle and the district it is commonly met with. It is interesting to note that Chaucer places his Strother in the far North, where Allen, too, was the favourite name. v. Langstroth.
