A surname in the shires of Dumfries, Wigtown, and Renfrew, is probably from Irish O'Sruitheain or O'Sruthain, descendant of Sruthan.' Nevin Astrowane, a follower of the earl of Cassilis, was respited for murder, 1526 (RSS., I, 3386). Mylne mentions an insolent person (in sixteenth century) named "William M'Fatrik M'Alister M'Robert M'Donoquhy called by other William Strowan" (quoted in Rent. Dunk., p. 317). The surname, which is also recorded in Perthshire, may be of local origin there from Strowan or Struan. John Stroyan, j.p., d.l., died at Lanrick Castle, Doune, 1941, in his eighty-sixth year.
