This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Stroud,' a parish in Gloucestershire; (a) 'of Strood,' a parish in Kent (v. Stroud). Both seem to have been anciently styled Strode. Mr. Lower, quoting Shirley's Noble and Gentle Men, says that 'the name is derived from Strode, in the parish of Ermington, Devon, which was in the possession of Adam de Strode in the reign of Henry III' (Patronymica Britannica). However true this may be, it is obvious that the towns of Stroud and Strood have also their representatives in our directories in the form of Strode.
