The ME. element strother, a marsh or swamp, is in common use in northern England and in Scotland. There is a Strother near Stonehouse, Lanarkshire, and a Struthers in Fife, but the references point to an origin further south, perhaps from Strother in Northumberland. The ancient Northumberland family of Strothers were lords of the manor of Kirk-Newton in the barony of Wark on the Tweed. John Strwtheris was witness in Glasgow, 1555 (Protocols, I), and Thomas Stroth-eris appears in Kelso, 1567 (Kelso, p. 526). Strwthiris and Strowdyr 1560.

Professor Sir John Struthers (1823-1899), anatomist and discoverer of the Arcade of Struthers, an anatomical feature that is implicated in repetitive strain injury. Professor Struthers was knighted for his service to medicine by Queen Victoria in 1898. He was also appointed Regius Professor of the University of Aberdeen in 1863. Sir Charles Darwin, who was famous for his theory of evolution, was a personal friend of Professor Struthers and also one of over 400 individuals who wrote letters supporting Struthers' application for the post of Regius Professor. Some of Struthers' teachings remain in use in various medical schools today.John Struthers (1776-1853), shoemaker, poet and writer, best known for his popular poetic works in Scotland. He was also known for co-writing The History of Scotland, from the Union to the abolition of the heritable jurisdictions in 1748 (1827), which was produced under a Royal Appointment during the reign of King George IV.
