A surname confined mainly to the shires of Dumfries and Kirkcudbright. Andrew Sturgioun and John Sturgioun were witnesses in Dumfries in 1544 (Anderson). Charles Strugeoun (with metathesis of r), sheathmaker in Edinburgh in 1608 (Edinb. Marr.), appears again in 1610 as Strudgeon (Laing, 1584). William Strudgeoun was reidare at Borg (Borgue) in Galloway, 1574 (RMR..). James Sturgeon in Wraithis is recorded in 1611, and Adam Sturgeone was heir of Clement Sturgeoun of Wraithes in 1636 (Retours, Kirkcudbright, 102,213). Margaret Sturgeon appears in Over Carntorsk in 1677 (Kirkcudbright), and Agnes Sturgeon was examined for the Test in Tinwald in 1685 (RPC., 3. ser. XI, p. 434). The surname is also recorded in New Abbey parish in 1705 (MCM., III, p. 414,417). Samuel Sturgeon wrote the Calloway herds, a lampoon, published in 1909. Strugeone 1648, Sturgione 1689.
