STUTEVILLE: Of territorial origin from Estouteville, now Etoutteville in the arrondissement of Yvetot in Normandy. Magister Robert de Stutevil witnessed a confirmation charter by Symon Loccard to the Abbey of Kelso, c. 1180 (Kelso, 333). Eustace de Stuteuil granted "duas sceppas farine auene" from his granary apud Lydel to the House of Soltre between 1180-1249 (Soltre, p. 6). Robert de Stutevilla witnessed a confirmation charter by Alan Hostiarius of date 1233 (REA., II, p. 268; REM., 83), and in 1276 an inquest was held concerning the lands held by the deceased Johanne de Stuteville (Bain, II, 71). Robert de Stuteville, or D'Estotville, dean of Dunkeld, was elected bishop of St. Andrews, per viam compromissi, June, 1253, and in 1273 bishop of Dunkeld (Dowden, p. 15, 58). Lower says the name is now Stoutwell.
