Surnames of the United Kingdom (1912) by Henry Harrison

A corruption of Stuteville.

Patronymica Britannica (1860) by Mark Antony Lower

Or Estoteville, a baronial name. William de Estoutville, Normandy 1180-95; Eustace and William de E., 1198 (Magni Rotuli Scaccarii Normanniae); William and Henry de Stotevilla (Ib.) Estoteyille was near Yvetot, and this family was one of the greatest houses in Normandy. Robert de E. came to England 1066. He is mentioned in Normandy 1070 (Ord. Vit. 575). The family had great possessions in all parts of England, particularly in the North.

The Norman People (1874)

Harrison seems to think that Stovel is the true representative of Estouteville, which he says means “farm of Stout.” He quotes de Stotevile in 1260 and de Stovile in 1274. But to me the early appearance of the second name lessens the likelihood of its being a corruption of the first, which we know to have gone on unaltered for centuries after that. The change of -ville to -field is of course very general
