Stutterd Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This surname is derived from an occupation. 'the stud-herd,' one who kept a stud of horses; v. Stodart, and compare Stotherd. One of a large class of North-English surnames with suffix herd, as in Shepherd; compare Calvert, Coward, Geldard, or Oxnard. The variant Stuttard is, of course, a mere sharpening of the more correct form, as in the case of Calvert for Calve-herd. Studdard evidently represented the old stud-herd, a breeder of horses or mares (v. Skeat on stud). Robertus Studhyrd, 1379: Poll Tax of Yorkshire.
