This surname is derived from a geographical locality. an old form of 'de la Zouch.' I cannot give any satisfactory derivation of this local term. Lower says, 'The baronial family who gave the suffix to Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire, were a branch of the Earls of Brittany... . The founder of the race in England was William le Zusche, who died in the first year of King John. In a charter he calls Roger la Zusche his father, and Alan, Earl of Brittany, his grandfather.' ... Lower adds that Camden asserts that 'Zouch signifieth the stocke of a tree in the French tongue.' If this be true, Zouch and its variants, such as Souch, Such, Sutch, are but equivalent to the English Stubbs, Stock, Stubbings, &c.
