The surname Suitariu comes from the Finnish name Suutari, which means 'shoemaker' or 'cobbler'. The high prevalence of the Suitariu surname in Romania and especially in the Transylvania dates back at least to the 19th century when this name appeared first to be registered in Church documents of marriage. It is thought to be a misspelling of the Finnish name Suutari due to manual entry in Church documents of marriage and differences in languages between Finnish and Romanian (which does not use double vowels). It could be the unintentional result of the registration of a marriage between a Finnish man and a Romanian woman in the region of Transylvania in the 18th century which was registered with the misspelled surname in church documents and further on propagated in all official registrations creating the new name which was further used by all descendants.
