Sukroo Surname Meaning

User-submitted Reference

Wilhelm Sukro or Wilhelm Van Sukro was married in 1866 to Ann Lynch from Cavan, Ireland at the Presbyterian Manse, Stratford near Sale, Victoria, Australia. On the marriage certificate he signs his name as Van Sukro or Von Sukro and his place of origin as Posen, Poland. His death certificate in Bairnsdale, Victoria, Australia in 1899, aged 60 years, states that he was born in Pthrussia. His naturalisation papers confuses things further by stating his name as Wilhelm Sukow. He was probably of Dutch descent, from Dutch squatter farmers, brought in to drain the swampy land known in Polish history as the Oledezy or a name similar to that.

Wilhelm Sukroo states on his marriage certificate that his parents are Frederich Van or Von Sukro and Mina or Wilhelmina Klopp (Klopp is again more likely to be of Dutch rather than ethnic German origin). The prevalence of the name in Indonesia and Malaysia seems to fit this explanation, quite well, because they were known as the Dutch East Indies (Colonies) at one time and again the typically Dutch Van prefix to Sukro seems to have been dropped and the name shortened to Sukro. Whether or not the people carrying the Sukro name in these areas are partially Dutch descendants or have "acquired" the name over time in these Dutch colonial areas, or adopted the name, some other way, is, at this point, unknown/open to speculation.

Wilhelm Sukro has also turned up in Darlinghurst Jail records and newspapers with two other Prussian sailors Henry Crewger and Charles Harfst (Heinrich Kruger and Karl Harfst) because they "jumped ship" in Sydney Harbour in 1859 from the US Bostonian (departed from Hamburg Germany) onto a Dutch ship in the harbour.

The Sukro surname was altered in the 1890s to Sukroo. It is speculated this was because of the Boar War of the late 1890s and the Dutch associations of the Van part of the name or the Prussian War of 1864 or WWI and the German associations. Perhaps the double "of" on the end was to make it resemble the word, kangaroo, and to make it more typically Australian and reflective of the new homeland.
