Sulovari Surname Meaning
User-submitted Reference
Sulovari is a typical Albanian surname, given to people originally from the region of Sulova. Etymologically is composed by the root of the word, "sulo" which is in slave (Bulgarian) language with the suffixes: -v- (bulgarian grammar), -a-, -r- and -i- (albanian grammar), all giving new and different meaning to each formed word. The complete word "sulovari" in the albanian language literally mens "person from the region of sulova".
Sulo in the Bulgarian language means chump, or big wooden piece of tree, while the suffix -v-/-ov- is used in some slave countries and especially in Bulgaria as a meaning of paternity, like the suffix -vic- in Serbia and -ic- in Croatia.
During the middle ages, especially at the end of the First Bulgarian Empire, circa the year 900, under the command of Simeon the Great, Bulgaria invaded almost all of the modern state of Albania, and kept it invaded (periodicaly) for almost 200 years. During this time many toponyms (name of places, regions, cities, mountains etc) changed into slave-bulgarian roots, many of which are still used on this day.
During this time the hilly-mountainous region between Belsh and Gramsh change the toponym into Sulova, which is till used now days. The root of the word is sulo meang chump with the suffix -v- meaning patriarchy, but is Albanised with the suffix -a- which in the albanian grammar is used to give feminine words specification, like the word -"the"- in the english language. In this case is used the feminine suffix -a- and not the masculine -i-, because the word "region" in the albanian language is feminine.
are called "sulovar" in singular. The suffix -r-, is some cases in the albanian grammar has the meaning "from", so literally sulovar means "person from Sulova". Even thought they might have different surnames, people living outside of the region recognize them all after the characteristic of being "sulovars". (E.x: people form New York have different surnames, but they are all recognized as "New Yorkers").
Usually surnames are given to people regarding one or some of the characteristics of the person, that's why, when people of this region migrated to other part of Albania, they were recognized after the characteristic of being "sulovar". With time they lost their original surname, for the surname Sulovari , with the suffix -i- that as said is used to give specification to masculine words. Sulovari literally means "The person from the region of Sulova".
