Sumpton Surname Definition:

Mr. Lower writes, 'This very remarkable name (Sumption) appears to be a contraction of "Assumption" (i.e. of the Virgin Mary), the church festival, and to be cognate with Pentecost, Christmas, Easter, &c.' (Patronymica Britannica). This is quite possible, as nearly all the church festivals are recorded in our directories; but it is more probable, for want of evidence, that both Sumption and Sumpton are variants of Somerton, the p being intrusive, as in Thompson or Simpson.
