Supple Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

While never numerous the Supples are very much in evidence since the first of them came to Ireland with Strongbow in 1171. There is scarcely an extant record, particularly those dealing with counties Limerick and Cork, which does not mention them. Though I have never had occasion to make an exhaustive search for them references I have noted from time to time occupy a full page of a large ledger. This, however, is not the place for a detailed account of them.

They lost much of their property in the Desmond wars of the sixteenth century, the Supples of Castletown, Co. Limerick, were transplanted as papists under the Cromwellian régime, and at least one from Kilcolman, Co. Cork, was outlawed as a Jacobite, but others held on and the family never_ceased to be one of substance in west Munster.

The name occurs as Soople in Co. Roscommon, which is in accordance with the local pronunciation of it.

George Supple of “The Nation”, who emigrated to Australia after the Rising of 1848, was implicated in an extraordinary murder trial in which he was condemned to death three times, but the sentence was finally commuted. He died in New Zealand about 1900.
