From the name of the shire. David de Sothirlandae was partner to an agreement in 1332 (Scon, p. 120). Nicolas of Sothyrland had a charter from his brother, the earl of Sothyrland of sixteen davachs called Thorbol in 1360 (OPS., II, p. 725). Maurice de Sotherland had a safe conduct in 1364 (CSR., I, p. 147), and Nicholaus de Suthirlandia was juror on assize in 1389 regarding the mill lands of Quarelwode in Moray (REM., p. 171). Alexander Sutherland was vicar of Westray, 1441 (Old Lore Misc., IV, p. 13), and Master Alexander Suthirland was vicar of Inuernis, 1480 (Cawdor; p. 440). Safe conducts were issued for Margaret of Sutherlande, Robert of Sutherlande, and Alexander of Sutherlande, "Escottz," 1444 (Bain, IV, 1175). James de Suthirlande was admitted burgess of Aberdeen, 1447 (NSCM., I, p. 11). Several persons of this name had remissions for their share in taking and holding the Castle of Akirgill in Caithness, 1547 (OPS., II, p. 778). James Suddirland was "onderfold" (= underfoud, i.e. under bailiff) of Fetlar, 1558 (OSR., I, p. 79). Patrick Suddirland, witness in Culross, 1569 (Laing, 845), and Alexander Suderland was retoured heir in certain lands in the sheriffdom of Caithness, 1602 (Retours, Caithness, 4). Forbes Sutherland, an Aberdeenshire sailor, was the first Briton buried in Australian soil, May, 1770. Suyrland 1665.
