In Anglo-Saxon charters Sud-tun-' the southern homestead or enclosure'-a name consequently of very common application. Heraldry also attests the commonness of the surname by more than fifty coats assigned to it. See Norton, Easton, and Weston.
Local. A town in Devonshire, England—the south town.
Thomas, founder of the Charter House, was son of Richard Sutton (who d. 1558), Steward of the Courts in Lincoln, and a tenant of the See of Lincoln (Bancroft, Life of S.). The family is armorially identified with the Suttons of Washingborough, &c., who descended from Hamon Sutton, living c. 1430, and Viscount of Lincoln, who bore the same arms (Harl. MS. 1550). These arms are entirely different from those of the Suttons of Holderness, and those of Dudley. We do not find the name of S. in Lincoln before 1270, when William de Sutton held part of a knight’s fee from Robert de Everingham (Testa, 324). Sutton appears to have been part of the fee held from Robert de Everingham and the see of York by Thomas Neville of Rigsby and Sutton (Testa, 331). John de Neville was father of the latter, and was also named John ‘de Rigsby and the above William de Sutton was son of Geoffry de Sutton living 1270; who was probably brother of John de Neville or Rigsby. This was one of the numerous Lincolnshire branches of th e Nevilles of Normandy.
A location name in Cheshire, Devon, Lancashire, Nottinghamshire, Yorkshire, etc.
Sutton. —Scattered about in different parts of England, and best represented in Cheshire, Lancashire, Staffordshire, Norfolk, Kent, Wilts, etc. Sutton is a very common name of parishes, villages, etc., and probably the surname has been in nearly every case in the first place thus derived. We learn from the Hundred Rolls that six centuries ago the surname was numerous in Notts, Shropshire, Somerset, and also in Lincolnshire and Kent.
