A variant of Swain, which see. The name does not appear in Old English before 1033 At a later date Stwin (Swain) and Swan are often used for the same person. Swan filius Thore and William filius Thore were witnesses to a charter of the lands of Maddyrnyn (Madderty) a. 1189 (LIM., 6). This Swan was ancestor of the Ruthvens. In the reign of William the Lion the greater part of the territory of Crawford parish in Lanarkshire was held by Swein or Swan, son of Thor son of Swein (Neubotle, p. 102-104). Henry, son of Alan son of Swan, and Walter, son of Swan, were charter witnesses, c, 1200 (Scon, 125). Henricus filius Swani was witness to a concord, c. 1147-50 (RD., p. 9), Suuenus prepositus regis, c, 1130 (ibid., p. 13). Thorus filius Swani, witness at Perth, c. 1130 to a mandate regarding ships trading at Inviresc (ibid., p. 12). William Swyne had charter of eighth part of Gaitmilk before 1583 (ibid., p. 468), David Swan had a letter of tack of the lands and town of Murdocarny, 1499 (RSS., I, 408), Alexander Swan to underlie the law in Fife, 1531 (Trials, I, p. 157), William Suan was witness in Glasgow, 1550 (Protocols, I), and half the myln of Dundaff was leased to John Swan in 1585 (Scon, p. 226).
