Swanton Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

William Suantoun, saidler in Irvine, 1666 (Irvine, II, p. 205). Perhaps of English origin from Swanton in county Norfolk, England.

The Surnames of Scotland (1946) by George Fraser Black (1866-1948)

Though this is an English name derived from a place in Norfolk it has become closely identified with west Cork since the seventeenth century. There are no less than twelve references to Swantons in the Fifteenth Report of the Irish Record Commision (1825) all of the seventeenth century, including a Connacht certificate.

The name occurs frequently in the Cork and Ross wills and in the marriage licence bonds for the same diocese from 1690. Practically all the fairly numerous Swanton births of the nineteenth century were registered in Co. Cork; in 1853 Griffith found as many as 58 Swanton families in west Cork and in 1878 there were seven of the name among the larger landowners of Co. Cork, owning between them 11,750 acres. A few Swantons do appear in our records elsewhere e.g. a sheriff of Co. Kildare in 1675.

The n1ost notable of the Co. Cork family were those who distinguished themselves in France. James Swanton (c. 1760—1828), who at the age of twelve was adopted by his uncle the abbé Swanton, served in Berwick's regiment of the Irish Brigade and afterwards as a colonel in the French army. Hilaire Belloc was his grandson. His son Armand (c. 1785-c. 1830) was also an officer in the Irish Legion; he was said to be the handsomest officer in the French army.
