From ME. Swein (
= Swain(e, q.v.
From 1288 throughout the mediaeval period this name occurs frequently in records relating to several counties of Leinster. The English name is derived from the Norse swein (servant); but it has been claimed that in some cases Swayne is a synonym of Sweeney. It does not appear to have been used synonymously with the more numerous Swan, found in Antrim and other parts of Ulster. SIF 142
These two names have been much confused but Swan, except where it occurs as a synonym of Swayne, is of much later introduction into Ireland than Swayne. The latter is quite frequent in mediaeval Irish records from 1297, when Walter Swayne was coroner of Offaly, for the most part in Leinster from Co.
Kildare to Co. Louth (one of Ardmoyle, Co. Tipperary in 1297 was an exception). The first I have noted is Laurence Sweyn mentioned in an Offaly charter of 1288. Swan became numerous from the middle of the seventeenth century, being found from that time until the present day (apart from Dublin the population of which is made up of people from all the provinces) mainly in Ulster. Swan is now much more numerous than Swayne which cannot be identified with any particular county or area.
These English names have several different derivations-from Old-English swán (peasant), swan (the bird), Old-Norse svein (servant) etc. etc. Dr. Douglas Hyde considered that some Irish Swaynes are actually MacSweeneys.
(English) The man who acted as a servant or attendant; one who tended swine; descendant of Swain (young man, or boy servant).
The ancient name of Swain, which is now best represented in Lincolnshire, Leicestershire, Derbyshire, and Devonshire, was established in the form of Sweyn, rarely of Swayn, during the 13th century in Lincolnshire, Norfolk, Cambridgeshire, and Oxfordshire, being most numerous in the last two counties (H. R.). In the east of England it is probable that Swain is but the old Danish name of Sweyn. In the time of the English Harold, his elder brother bore the name of his maternal uncle, Sweyn, King of Denmark.
