Swine Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

"There has long existed in the village of Swinton a family of Swines, the head of which, towards the end of the eighteenth century, asked and obtained permission from the lord of the manor to change the name to Swinton, 'on account of the nastiness of the beast.' The permission was never acted on" (Stwnton, p. ln). In connection with this name a story in a Renton charter is worth relating. The charter records that Roger de Riston hired John 'porcarius' (i.e. swineherd) as his substitute in a wager of battle. The swineherd was the victor, and received a toft and croft and three acres of Great Reston as his fee, which he then granted to the Priory of Durham (Rnine, 397 et seq.). Laurence Swyn, burgess of Aberdeen, 1294 (REA., I, p. 35). Adam Swyn of Rystone, Berwickshire, rendered homage, 1296 (Bain, II, p. 206). Crispinie Swyne in Dunfermline, 1581 (Dunfermline), and Margaret Swyne in St. Andrews, 1589 (St. Andrews, p. 645). David Swyne, baker in Edinburgh, 1620 (Edinb. Matr.), and Crispine or Crispinion Swyne was church elder in Dysart, 1641 (PBK., p, 209). Perhaps a shortened form of Old English Sigewine ('wise friend') through the form Siwine.
