Metcalf-Jamieson (Scottish dictionary) has: Somer, a sumpter, applied to both men and horses, OF. somier, sommier. William Sumer witnessed a grant by Richard de Paynstoun to the Hospital of Soltre between 1180-1214 (Soltre, p. 5). In 1326 David II granted to William Somyr for life an annual rent of 40s. (Stodart, II, p. 375), Johannes Sovmer was burgess of Perth in 1365 (RMS., I, 196), and in 1376 the lands of Scralyne were leased to William Sumer (RHM., I, p. lxvii). Ceorge Somyr was one of a number chosen "to inquire and knaw vppone the land is and guidis pertaining to Walter Ogilvy of Owres" in 1478 (ALA., June, 1478), and a later George Symmer was charged with oppression, 1529 (Trials, I, p. 141). Adam Summer had sasine in 1550 as heir of Barthillomew Summyr in Glasgow (Protocols, I), and Andrew Symmer, quarrior, admitted burgess freeman of Glasgow gratis in 1584, "becaus he is ane calsay maker and hes promised to mak twa rude of calsay, gratis" (Burgesses). David Sommer appears in Ancrum in 1633 (Retours, Roxburgh, 152), John Symer was trade burgess of Aberdeen, 1641 (ROA., I, p. 232), John Simmer was fiar of Brathinsch in 1646 (Jervise, Land of Lindsays, p. 433), and Elizabeth Simmer is recorded in Stank, parish of Stonehouse, 1687 (Lanark CR.). Symmer or Somyr of Balzeordie, an old Angus family of whom nothing much is known. They possessed Balzordie in 1450. In 1682 Symmer of Baljordie were described as "ane ancient familie and chief of the name" (Account of shire of Forfar, Spottiswoode Miscellany, I, p. 335). They continued to be considered "chief of the name" till about the middle of the eighteenth century when the male branch failed (Jervise, Land of Lindsays, p. 310-311). They took a prominent part in local affairs. At least one member of the family changed the spelling in last century to Seymour. Simer and Simers 1686, Summyr 1550, Sumyer 1454, Symer 1633, Symir 1551, Symmeir 1530, Symour 1688. In the Edinburgh Marriage Records, 1595—1800, the name occurs as: Symmer, Simmer, Symers, Summer, Summers, Somer, Somers, and Sommer; and in Greyfriars Burial Register, 1658-1700: Somers, Simers, Simeres, Sommers, and Summers.
