A form of Simon, which in the N. T. represents O. T, Simeon (and Symeon). The Hebrew is Shim'on, a name of doubtful meaning. Explained by some as meaning "offspring of hyena and wolf" (Encyclopaedia Biblica, IV, p. 4531), by others as from the verb shame "hear." The N. T. form appears to be due to confusion with a Greek nickname. Simon "flat-nosed." (2) It may also represent the common Old English personal name Sigemund which later became Simon and Sumond. Symon, capellanus, witnessed a charter by William Bruce to Adam Carlyle, c. 1194-1214 (Annandale, I, p. 2), and Symon or Simon, archidiaconus of Aberdeen, was a charter witness, 1172, c. 1189-99 (RAA., I, p. 57). Symon filius Ade Leving, 1298 (Scon, p. 92). George Symon is recorded in the lordship of Huntly, 1600 (SCM., IV, p. 283), and John Symon in Cairnmorc, parish of Glass, is recorded in 1743 (Moray).
