Synge Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

In England this name is also written as it is pronounced-Sing. It has only been in Ireland since the beginning of the seventeenth century and never became at all numerous though it is worthy of note that as many as eleven Synge marriage licence bonds are recorded in Co. Cork between 1681 and 1739.

I include it here because of the eminence of so many of the family. Territorially the name has been very scattered. The first I know of was born in Co. Louth; the main family came from Shropshire in the person of George Synge (1594-1652) who was Bishop of Cloyne; in 1792 the will of Edward Synge of Syngefield (Co. Offaly) was proved; in 1878 de Burgh recorded eight Synges with considerable estates in eight different counties; today it is found in Co. Wicklow and Dublin. The Edward referred to above was a clergyman, and it is as Protestant ecclesiastics that the Synges, apart from John Millington Synge (1871-1909) the playwright, have been most prominent. Five of them were bishops: dealing with another Edward Synge (1649-1751), Archbishop of Tuam, the Dictionary of National Biography says of him “as the son of one bishop, the nephew of another, himself an archbishop and the father of two other bishops, his position in ecclesiastical biography is probably unique”. Yet another Edward Synge, prebendary of St. Patrick's, preached a remarkable sermon in 1733 advocating relaxation of the anti-Catholic penal laws.
