In Roman times, it appeared in the form of 'Samum'. Its root may be related to the name of the French river Somme, and may be derived from the Celtic word 'samo', meaning calm. The most famous bearer of the surname was the confectioner of Serbian descent Mátyás Szamos, born Mladen Szavits. His factory called Szamos, established in 1935, is the leading Hungarian producer of marzipan and related products.
