'Szeben', just like Sibiu (Ro.) and Cibinium (Latin) are all dialect form of the same etymological origin - the etymology though, is diputed, but here are the different theories:
- Most likely: From the Cibin river, which runs through the fortress of the town - likely of Latin origin (etymology is still unclear).
- Potentially from a Bulgar-Turkic name; 'Sibin'/'Sebin'/'Säbin', meaning rejoice, or happiness.
- Potentially from the Slavic word 'sǐbu', meaning sheep.
- Another theory suggests it is from Slavic 'Svibin', (likely where the rivers name would come from), but unfortunately the meaning of this word is still undetermined.
It is important to note that it is unknown what came first, the name of the river or the name of the fort/town. Also, 'Nagy' in 'Nagyszeben' (the professional/legal name in Hungarian) simply means 'big' and both the word and name are still in common use today.
