Tóth (also written as Tót, and less frequently, Toth or Tot) is the third most common Hungarian surname (behind only Nagy and Kovács). It is also common in nearby Slovakia and Romania, due to the presence of ethnic Hungarian minorities. In the Middle Ages, the adjective 'tót' meant all the Slavs living in the Carpathian basin. By the 19th century, it got limited to Slovaks only. And in the 20th century, it disappeared from the official language, replaced by 'szlovák'. However, it has remained a common family name, and figures in the name of towns and villages where Slavs had been settled: Tahitótfalu, Tótkomlós, Tótvázsony, Lengyeltóti etc. 'Tót' is derived from an Indo-European word that probably sounded 'tauti' or 'touti' and meant 'people'. In this sense, 'tót' is a cousin of such words as 'Teuton', 'Dutch', or the Germans' endonym, 'Deutsch'.
