Talty Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Ó Tailtigh The name of a Clare sept which has no connexion with the Ulster sept of Tally, q.v. SIF 143

A Guide to Irish Names (1964) by Edward MacLysaght

Talty is essentially a Co. Clare name and when met elsewhere will be found to be of Clare origin.

While accepting Ó Tailtigh as the Gaelic form, as given by Woulfe, I think he is wrong in saying that it is a metathesized form of Ó Taighligh, the older form of which is Ó Taichligh (as, e.g., in the Four Masters and “Topographical Poem” of O'Dugan and O'Heerin). That name belongs to Tyrone and Fermanagh and appears to have no connexion at all with Clare. Ó Taithligh is anglicized as Tally, Tilly and Tully. Tully, it is true, is found in Galway, the county nearest to Clare, but there it is always an abbreviated form of MacAtilla (see Irish Families pp. 278,279).
