From the Old English personal name Thancred. Thomas Thancard who witnessed a charter by William the Lion granted at Lannarc between 1187-89; (REG., p. 65) gave name to the parish of Thankerton, Lanarkshire. He was one of the witnesses to a confirmation charter by William the Lion to David de Haia, son of William de Haia of Herol (SCM., II, p. 305). Between 1204-11 he gave to the monks of Arbroath the land between Ethkar and Chaledouer which King Malcolm had given Thankard his father (RAA., I, p. 69, 70), and also gave some land at Moydirual (= Motherwell) to the monks of Paisley (RMP., p. 310,412). Robert, son of Thancard, witnessed a charter by William of Cunnigeburc to the monks of Kelso (Kelso, p. 281).
