From the old lands of the name in Tarbat, Ross. The old family of the name, now extinct, were followers of the earls of Ross. In the sixteenth century the lands were in possession of the Macgullochs. Johannes de Tarale witnessed confirmation of a charter by the earl of Ross to Paul McTyre in 1362 (RMS., I, 423), and in the following year William, earl of Sutherland granted to John of Tarale six davachs of Ruchy (or Ruthy) in Straflete (OPS., II, p. 719). William Tarraill was juror on inquisition at Inverness, 1430 (RMS., a, 179). Thomas of Terraile was juror on an inquest made at the head court of John, earl of Sutherland in 1471 (OPS., II, p. 693). Angus de Terrel, Alexander de Terrel, and others, were killed in a clan battle "in the scti barnabi apti, año dñi M°cccc°lxxxvi, apud aldecharwis" 'Kalendar of Fearn). Jonet Terrell who had a precept of clare constat as heir of her grandfather, Hugh Terrell, of the lands of Strathfleit II 1494 (OPS., II, p. 719) is doubtless the Jonet Terrell who had a grant of the lands of Innerbreky and Balnegall in the earldom of Ross to herself and heirs in 1512 (RMS., II), and the Jonet Terroll of Innerbreky who resigned her lands of Petintreill in the earldom of Suderland in 1529 (OPS., II, p. 630). Sir William Tarall, a cleric, held the chancellary of Caithness, 1497 (RSS,, I), and John Taroll of Doill and David Taroll in Doill were participants in the siege of Dunrobin Castle, 27 June 1519 (Sutherland, p. 177). Alexander Terrell or Tarrell, son and heir of deceased John Terrell of Doill, who had seisin in half the lands of Doill and Carrell in 1546, is recorded as bailie of Master William Hepburne, dean of Caithness, 1562, and as bailie of Golspie, 1566 (OPS., II, p. 667,678, 723,727). In the early part of last century the remaining members of the clan took the name of Mackintosh.
