I can offer little information on this name to which Woulfe devotes just two words viz. “Ó Tarsnáin, Tarsnane” i.e. no derivation, no old anglicized form, no location. At least I can state that it is a west Clare surname. It appears among the Clare freeholders in 1821 and following years and in all the west Clare birth registrations that I have consulted. A somewhat similar name is Tarsany or MacTarsany, but that has no connexion with Co. Clare: it appears in the Co. Armagh hearth money rolls of 1664.
Judging from nineteenth century birth registration statistics Tarsany and MacTarsany are no longer extant in Ulster.
