From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Of local origin from the lands of Tarvit in the parish of Cupar, Fife. Henry de Taruethe, tenant of the bishop of St. Andrews in the county of Fife, rendered homage in 1296. In the same year he was juror on an inquest on the lands of Disarde (Dysart). His seal bears an eight-rayed figure and S' Henrici d' Tarven (Bain, II, p. 205,216, 553). There was a family of Tarvit of that Ilk in Fife. Alexander Teruat de eodem appears as juror on an incuisition at Cupar in 1516 (SCBF., p. 49). John Tervet of that Ilk and Elias Tervett, his uncle, had remission in 1509 (Trials, I, p. 110). John Tarvett was tenant of Newbigging in Lothian in 1636 (RPC, 2. ser. VI p. 592). James Tarvet, wright in St. Andrews, 1683 (PSAS, LIV, p. 239). John Tervett in Newbigging, 1652, and Christian Tervett in Thankerton, 1673, and Janet Tarvett in Edmiston, parish of Biggar, 1681 (Lanark CR.).
